The global importance of Mindoro in terms of biodiversity conservation has long been known, because of numerous species that are only endemic to the island and could not be found elsewhere.

1998

The Shell Philippines Exploration, BV provided USD 75,000 for the development of the Mindoro Biodiversity Conservation Programme

A collaborative initiative of several government and non-government institutions and individuals, to implement priority measures for biodiversity conservation in the island such as baseline research, data analysis, production of educational materials, and teachers’ training.

The teacher’s trainings were conducted in 1998 and 1999 in Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro and Calapan, Oriental Mindoro, respectively. The project was aimed at capacitating the teachers in incorporating environmental education in their daily lessons.

1999

An island-wide biological survey was conducted, led by Dr. Leticia E. Afuang together with Dr. Juan Carlos T. Gonzalez with Dr. and Andres T. Dans of the University of the Philippines Los Baños.

This has been the most comprehensive biodiversity research conducted in the Island of Mindoro.

The records in the survey became the basis in the formulation of the Mindoro Biodiversity Information System, a database for species found in Mindoro, the first of its kind in the country.

2008

The program emerged as the Mindoro Biodiversity Conservation Foundation, Inc.

Which was registered in the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of the Philippines on March 19 with assistance from Malampaya Joint Venture Partners. It is registered as a non-stock, non-profit organization with the primary purpose “to enable the conservation of Mindoro’s unique and threatened environment, biodiversity and natural resources into perpetuity, through the establishment of integrated biodiversity conservation and development programs, which include improved dissemination of knowledge, management practices and the active participation and collaboration of relevant stakeholders, particularly those who are dependent upon the natural resources of the region.”
